Sun Harp

2006

This design was selected from a call to artist to create a sculpture that would celebrate light in response to the optics industry of the Tucson valley. This project reinterprets one of the oldest optical instruments frequently used in the landscape, the sundial. The scale of this sundial is in keeping with the majestic proportions of Oro Valley. The vertical fin or "gnomon" is 18' tall, provides the focal point of the sculpture, and is suspended with optically coated cables that vibrate with iridescent light reflected from the sun. The cable are anchored into a field of native boulders.
