In the wake of the events of 911 I found myself in a confused state unable to focus on anything but the incessant barrage of news and grief felt by all of us. As an artist I felt paralyzed and not able to focus on my work, so I decided to turn off the news and learn a new skill based on a simple meditative act. I had wanted to weave metal into complex 3 dimensional shapes, so I started to experiment. The act was wonderful because I could focus for hours and leave the troubles of the outside world behind. I did not realize this at the time, but I had learned from the simple meditations of my grandmother. As a child I used to watch my grandmother spin intricate designs with wool and cotton. She could spend house crocheting, while the rest of New Orleans buzzed on around her. She would use this act to find peace in times of loss and pain, and create beautiful gifts for her family and friends. Out of the pain and anguish of 911 came the discovery that my grandmother had placed this wonderful gift deep in my heart!
